Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
